After our morning of music with the Governor we broke for a quick lunch. Those who wished could gather at the Third Street Gallery. Curt Gillespie would lead us caravan style out to the Grape creek area on the east side of town toward the Wet Mountains. WE met around 1:00. The site to which we were going was on private propery. Let me say the SAG, Sangres Art Guild, gave us a map when we arrived with sites designated and named where local people would allow us to paint on their property.
The creek area had a variety of scenery to choose from. It had streams, trees, shade, rocks, vistas with mountains and blue skies. So we wandered around searching out good spots. I found a place on a rock put up my easel, chair, and pastel boxes. I have a Heileman box as my main box, filled with mainly Terry Ludwigs, Schminke's and Senneliers (all the wonderfully soft pastels). I also have boxes of nupastels and my prize Roches all divided into various value and hue groupings. Had to struggle to get my umbrella slanted just so to provide the shade I wanted. I wanted both my pastel surface -Wallis board. and my pastel box to be shaded. Finally, this did not go smoothly and took some time.

I began blocking in with nupastels, using primarily the complements of the hues which I saw. If I saw green I would use a variation of red. I blocked in 3 values primarily the deepest value, medium value and the lightest. Just as I was getting into the rhythm a gust of wind came up and turned my large box of pastels upside down on the ground. I now had many broken pieces of pastel with which to work and had to quickly reorganize my box and get myself set up. A plein air painter races the changing light and must just go with whatever the environment throws at them. I raced time and finally resolved some issues and finished. I had perhaps 2 hours of painting this view with my wrestling with my equipment.

Thus ended Friday. We were to select 3 of our best pieces, frame them and bring them to the Third Street Gallery Saturday morning to be judged by Mark Daily. Saturday late afternoon awards were to be announced.
We finished our day as we began it- being serenaded by our singing cowboy as we ate dinner.

We awoke to Friday- a day which we could, if we wanted, paint a model at the local train museum. But wait-- our location is changed to the Third Street Gallery-- Why?? Surprise Governor HIckenlooper is campaigning in the valley and what is happening? Art, Our event! Governor Hickenlooper is scheduled to come to the gallery in the morning to see the artwork we had completed in one day and to see us painting Tim our cowboy guitar, blues-playing model.

Also Tim was a Yoga afficianado and had interesting stories to tell as he modeled.

Then a little bit of a flurry occurred and in came Governor Hickenlooper and his crew. He walked around looking and chatting.
When Gov. Hickenlooper saw Tim he said "Say I once had a guitar like that and I gave it to a college girl friend of mine"Here
In early October an arty friend ,Jeanne, and I decided to try our luck at an Alla Prima event in Westcliffe. Neither one of us had been there before and it sounded like a cool event. We both knew of artists from the Denver area who had participated and we hoped were going to participate. A big plus was that Mark Daily was the judge, (he is a well respected artist from Denver).
We packed up our gear and headed out -http://www.sangresartguild.org/3rd-street-gallery/calls-to-artists/alla-prima-westcliffe-2014-prospectus/. Not knowing the wonderful beauty we were to encounter. What a treat!! Westcliffe is located between the Sangres de Cristos and the Wet Mountains. It is not on a well traveled highway but tucked away. So it has a simplicity and unspoiled beauty of a small town tucked in between 2 mountain ranges.
We took part in a 4 day event with 25 artists from across Colorado
and from nearby states as well (Kansas). What a find! Many artists had been participating year after year.
The town had an Arts Hullaballoo which included a parade on Saturday.
On Wednesday, our windy/rainy first day. We(Jeanne Echterenacht, Jennifer Riefenberg and myself)painted from inside the Third Street Gallery looking out. In the evening the event planners had us bowling and it was fun to meet up with the other artists who had been painting all over the valley before the bad weather started.

Continuing on in this past summer's plein air adventures.__ Working plein air is so important for my craft. Solving visual problems in a 2 or 3 hour sign is invigorating. It forces me to make rapid decisions, because the light is changing, and I learn to trust my artistic judgement about color and line.
Last year Henry Meininger offered his ranch to the painters enrolled in the Colorado Plein air event. I was unable to take advantage of his offer because I was out of town. I heard it was a good event and looked forward to being able to participate this year.

Henry Meininger and his store Meininger's is well known in Denver. His store is the primary art supply store in Denver. Henry donates and supports the artistic community in many ways. One way is to offer his families cabin for a day of painting. The land which surrounds the cabin offers so many interesting views.
I continue to attempt to take a true photo of my art work. Yesterday I tramped around the garden with a sheet draped over a ladder. I finally found a good location in a shady area. The most success of the day. I read a very interesting article this morning in FASO on my quest http://faso.com/fineartviews/80108/i-need-a-good-photo-of-my-artwork and thought to share it with you all in case you have the same quest.
So here is my more successful effort as well as a slightly modified piece of art work.

So this pastel which I entitle- "There is Gold in Them Thar Hills" is going to be on view somewhere in the Colorado State Capitol. I entered it in the "Honoring the Capitol Dome Exhibition" and received notification that it was accepted. It will be on view from the first of October until March 15. I am needless to say honored and delighted.

Ah I would like to make a slight change in some information I gave on an earlier post about the discovery of gold in the state of Colorado. My historian husband noticed I said the discovery of gold here was about 100 years ago. In fact it was around 155 years ago.

I will let you know where this piece goes as time progresses. So tomorrow it goes to the framers!

Yesterday was one of those glorious days to be a Plein Aire artist. So my friend Sherri and I took advantage of it and headed out to the beauty of Castlewood Canyon.

I was first introduced to Castlewood Canyon this past July. I attended a workshop given by the artist Albert Handell and this is one of the locations we ended up painting. Albert loves rocks and his shared love gave me a renewed appreciation. The other bonus was to learn about the beauty of and existence of Castlewood Canyon on the start of the eastern plains near Castle Rock Colorado. It is a National Park and really quite a wonder. My friend Sherri bought a National Park Pass and we took advantage of that wonderful day to paint.
This is the 18"x12" Pastel which I made of the spot where we were. We were on top of the canyon under some pine trees. We caught a lovely gentle breeze, just enough to keep us cool while we painted.
Here is Albert giving a demo in oil . He works both in oil and pastel. I will include a link so that you can have an opportunity to see his work. I found him a very good teacher and would highly recommend him to you. He is very knowledgable and has a wealth of good info for the working artist.

I woke this morning to read a post from my friend and fellow artist Jeanne Echternach http://jeanneechternachfineart.com/blog/80391/day-1-of-30. Ah it inspired me for my own personal challenge.

I am a pastellist, sometime blogger, always wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother!, gardener, reader, traveler-- you get the idea!! Now I thought I will do a painting a day this month. Great challenge, --but I won't be around my stuff every day this month. I will be thinking about and building my art practice and I thought I can take that challenge and post that.

So yesterday I finished a pastel and spent the day trying to take my best photo of it. Some say photo it in the bright shade- some say NEVER in the bright shade but always in the bright light.

Some say with white behind it. So if you were walking by my garden yesterday , you might have seen me leaning a 19 by 29 inch painting up against chairs, hanging it on walls, in the sun and shade and shooting the pastel with several different settings.
Finally I got one I liked.

This piece is about the Colorado Capitol Dome which has just been re gold- leafed. The gold came from the Cripple Creek mine and then was sent to Italy where it was made into gold leaf. Most of last year or rather the past 2 years the dome has been shrouded in plastic and fabric as the gold was applied. Now it is on view in all of its glory. Rather perfect for a state which largely came about for the gold found in its hills about 100 years ago.
I live in the land of Intermittent Spring. For the 2nd Monday in the month of April we have snow!! All manner of beautiful warm days were part of our Colorado lives last week. Lots of garden preparing, neighbors visited with while working outdoors, but, we do need water. At this time of year it visits us in the form of SNOW! Tulips are up to their throats in snow standing on their tiptoes as the snow quickly melts.

Never fear I am remembering the beauty of the Land of Eternal Spring==Guatemala. I returned from that beautiful place about 3 weeks ago. This is some of the beauty I experienced.
Guatemala especially La Antigua, where I visit during the dry season is quite temperate. So because I am wise to spring in the Rockies I have loaded my warm house with promises of spring.

I've even brought women who are known to look at blooming sakura(cherry tree) and placed them in my Dining Room.
So that I can look hungrily yearning for spring.
And now comes the true harbinger of a Rocky Mountain spring-- SNOW!!! Spring is truly on its way. Daffodils are hiding and tulips are still tucked and folded in their buds. Will the crab apple tree bear blossoms this year or will the snow nip them in their buds.?
Long ago in August I got ready to participate in the Colorado Plein Air http://gtmd.org/colorado-plein-air/ little did I know at that time that I would be placing that experience among some of the most wonderful arty experiences of 2013.

Let me start out and say the 2 ultimate life experiences happened this year.

1. I became a grandmother when Wyatt Fenton Gee was born.
2. I became a mother-in-law for the second time when my daughter Kate married Peter Fath in a beautiful wedding here in Colorado.

But in the art world, magnificent experiences of artfulness occurred quietly and stealthfully. I am going to recount just a few and see if you will also agree.

So there I was back in August accepting a challenge I have long wanted to take on - to paint in a series of locations through out Colorado on boards, paper or canvas with a special GTMD stamp and then to submit some for jurying to be a part of a final show. This year the show expanded to allowing the participants to paint all of Colorado. During this time several locations, museums etc. hosted the participants. It was great fun to see what the fellow artist/participants were painting as you stood maybe 10 or 20 feet from them. Here are a few photos of various places we painted.

Every place I painted I felt like I always do when I paint plein aire. I want to return. Not necessarily because I want to redo what I had done, but because when you sit someplace for 3 hours or more looking , reacting and putting down what you have seen you then have absorbed that place. These are all places one frequently rushes by to get somewhere else not realizing - we are there. I love plein aire painting because it puts the place I paint, inside of me. It does this in a way that does not happen in the studio. So one of my top arty experiences of the year was painting plein aire in Colorado.

Today I went off with the Colorado Pastel Society to paint plein aire. We went to the Spruce Mountain Open Space which is south of Denver proper. I live in a western city on the edge of the mountains. The earth has imperceptibly moved up from the Mississippi River basin for hundreds of miles. St Louis Missouri is an elevation of 456 feet and then Kansas City is at 865 by the time you travel the 3 hours on I -70, past Abilene, Ks (1,155 ) you reach Denver the Mile HIgh City at 5280 ft( 6.5 hours from Abilene). Here we are in vast sweeping space in crisp light with skies similar to the width of what a sailor views but without any halo of humidity). So today we were at approximately 7,1227 ft. on a vast open high plain.
I was back in the center of Denver by 12:30. I understand that just further around the trail one comes upon red rocks and wildflowers. Hopefully later this week I will head back there again looking for more wild flowers. It was invigorating to work in such wide open spaces. Lovely to be out of the studio, although I have a piece(in my studio that I am engaged in). Next Saturday the Golden Triangle Plein Aire Paint Out begins and this is a fine way to re-immerse myself in plein aire.

Still here, waking up at 2:00 in the morning thinking of cool ideas for blog posts and then heading down to the studio to paint or off to my life to breathe in.
I miss though,- focusing . Posting on this blog allows me to focus.

So some ideas of which I have been thinking about and may explore in some fashion later. Have to do with the color PURPLE.

February and early March in Guatemala seem a time of exploring the color - PURPLE., I plan to do so later.

Mean while I have put together a new edition of my website and would love to have your response to this endeavor. Please go look at it here http://cbuschmannart.com/. Don't only let me know what you think of it but please look at the work.
Most recently I have finished work about Italy and you can see some of it in "Italian Views". These pastels are based on my response to Umbria. I am participating in an exhibit "Italian Reflections in Umbria", next month, with my fellow artists who I accompanied to Italy. More about that later.
Now of course much more will be written of new beginnings. It is spring after all. Just to prove that is so in my family we are expecting the birth of our first grandson. Then just a wee bit later we will celebrate another family event - the wedding of our first daughter.
So I am full of happiness and have much to think about and much to write but as with all of us a full day. What could be better.
So I have turned once again to a wonderful thought voiced by the American Indians.

"We are all creators.
We Breathe.
To speak is to form breath and make manifest sound into the world.
As I write I create myself again and again.
Re-Create. And Breathe.
And I see that I am not one voice, but many:
all colors,
all sounds, all fears, all loves.
Actually I have been back for almost a month. We returned from our now annual Guatemalan adventure around the 11th of March. We volunteer with the Cascade Medical Team in the Highlands of Guatemala, and have done so for the past 6 years. Here is the link in case you want to know more http://www.cascademedicalteam.org/. This is a remarkably intense and rewarding experience. When my husband and I first thought we would participate we assumed we would only be involved one year. Here we are 6 years later.

I have fallen in love with Guatemala and look forward each year to the time getting to know the culture better.
Today is the day of Cupid and Eros that day to celebrate LOVE so I thought I would look up some of my most fav artists who have used the HEART in their ART. Of course Jim Dine comes first to mind, and it is interesting to note that many of these artists fall under that umbrella name of Pop- Artist.
Jim Dine who was born in Ohio in 1935 likes to use imagery to hang his landscapes on, I am paraphrasing here. In a life time the iconic graceful shape of the heart has allowed him to explore paint, printmaking, drawing, collage and sculpture.
I have been going to the Denver Art Museum exhibition "Becoming Van Gogh" as much as I could since it first arrived in Denver in late October. Each time I go I see old friends in the images on the walls. Many paintings and drawings are ones I once pored over in books.
I love this exhibition because it approaches Vincent Van Gogh in the serious way he approached his own work. The exhibit truly studies and looks at the manner in which Van Gogh deliberately went about acquiring skills and building on his own abilities to become the expressive human being whose art work has riveted our attention for more than a century.
If you are looking for confirmation of Vincent as some kind of basket case who crazily piled on color and line and then went roaring into a Provencal field and cut off his ear then this is not the exhibit for you.
At this writing the exhibit is over. It finished with a 24 hour continuous exhibit so the public could see this exhibit. The last few times my husband and I went we took notice of whom was looking with us at this exhibit. We saw a lot of families w/children discussing color and emotion. We saw students and fellow artists all carefully looking and discussing. This exhibit was wonderful. I highly recommend the book which was written as the catalog. I feel we have seen a true landmark exhibit.
Vincent went through a variety of visual steps I have watched adults and children travel as they learn how to handle an art medium. Working with too few subtle value changes, not recognizing their own personal visual communication skills as strengths. You can see he has power of composition and an interest in texture in this early piece. Now 6 years later after 1000's of drawing you can see that love of texture has evolved into a personal shorthand of dots and dashes, He has experimented with handling a reed pen and milk washes. His work shows and increased understanding of how to edit his emotion.
But it is still Vincent Van Gogh, after a long an arduous journey. His was a Journey that many artists recognize, they understand the path he trod. This exhibition at the Denver Art Museum was remarkable as it showed the markers of that path, a path many artists recognize because they so frequently set out on it themselves.

This past June I had the great good fortune to go to Italy and stay and work at La Romita-http://www.laromita.org/. La Romita is (as one friend said after I told her about my experience there ) a camp for artists. Ah yes it is, and in a beautiful setting above the city of Terni in the "green heart of Italy". Even though it was unusually dry and there were fires later in the summer it is still lush by my western eyes. It is the landlocked part of Italy and perhaps as I was raised in a landlocked state, i.e., Kansas, I felt a sense of recognition.
There is a comfortable studio in which to work (a reconverted chapel) . After a morning breakfast equipped with a map, laden down with our painting supplies, and filled with a lecture from the night before of where we were going. We were driven to some near or far hilltop town. Some you would recognize such as Assisi.
We would tumble out after traveling windy roads and find a place to perch and paint. Then we were returned to La Romita for a delightful lunch or we stayed out all day in places like Orvieto or Perugia.
One such blissful day we were driven to the ancient Roman town of Carsulae. This town was built on the Via Flaminia an original road of the Roman Empire which connected Rome to the Adriatic Sea. Theroad was built in 220-219 BC. The city gained prominence because of its beautiful site. Tacitus and Pliny the Younger both spoke of the beauty of the place. The road was also one on which you could travel to the springs of nearby San Gemini ( we painted San Gemini our first painting day). Carsulae was abandoned because of an earthquake and I also read because of robberies which eventually occurred scaring off merchants from the Via Flaminia.

Today you can see beautifully askew ruins. They include a theatre and amphitheatre and of course the Via Flaminia. I took refuge under some low hanging branches and sat down on what must have once been a busy thoroughfare and made a plein aire piece of the view.

Did I mention it was warm, hot, one needed shade. I looked across the hills which had given Carsulae its original beauty and had to agree with Pliny. This is a site of great beauty even today. Over my right shoulder I could follow the Via Flaminia and see the arch of Traiano (so named because silver coins from the time of the Emperor Trajan 98-117 were found there). This arch is the remainder of three and was originally covered in marble.

So this past year I have walked 3 much used roads of the past. Each one brings to my mind the daily lives of the people who lived along these paths. When I see the arch of
San Damianos (or Traiano) I wonder at the skill of the arch builders. I think also of the skill of the cliff dwellers of Canyon de Chelly and the piled stones creating the ball courts of Mixtel Viejo. Three places of overlapping times going about thier daily business of survival.
I have had the great good fortune to grow up on land which allows you to literally see the "bones of the earth". This is what I call the rises and hillocks of the geography of Kansas. Here in Colorado I see great ridges and vertebrae of the earth when I look at the Rocky Mountains. When I travel through New Mexico and Arizona, as I did this past spring, I am able to look into the very interior of the land. When I pass a deep arroyo or the edges of the Rio Grande Valley I feel as though I am looking between the very ribs of the land. Accompanied by good traveling friends I traveled beyond Mesa Verde past Shiprock, Arizona and onward to Chinle, Arizona. What pulled us was to experience a deep incision into the earth which humans have been living in since 2500 to 200 BC.

This groove into the earth has been known as Canyon de Chelly since the 1500's when the Spanish discovered and followed the Navajo Indians deep into this Canyon. The Canyon was called the Tseyi by the Navajo (Dine). This word Tseyi translates into "inside the rock". The Spanish mispronounced the name and it was adapted into English with a French-like spelling pronunciation.

If you want to see the area you must enter with a Navajo guide. We had a great guide who told us not only anthropological discoveries but stories of his youth growing up in the Canyon and ancient tales of Origin of the Anasazi. You need all these tales to be woven together as you ride the sand-laden road at the bottom of the Canyon.

That was to see close up the rock which goes by the name of "Spider Woman".

"Spider Woman" is reputed to have sung along with Tawa, humans into existence. The Navajo offered her the top of the rock on which to live. She taught the women to weave. As you know spiders have been associated with the art of weaving in many cultures. In Greece there was Arachne , Amanetsu in Japan and Ixchel of the Mayans. "Spider Woman" came up from the 2nd world to the 3rd world and that passage is said by some to be marked by this red pinnacle upon which she made her dwelling.

The Canyon for me had a spiritual quality. I not only marveled at the numbers of people and stories there were here but the spiritual beauty of this place which had provided life , meaning and art to its residents.

When I go off on trips I am not one to plan them with an overarching relationship. While I was sitting around the house with my bunged up foot "elevated and iced" I was open to reflection and began to see some connections which I wished to share and think about with you.
First in late February early March my husband and I were volunteering in the highlands of Guatemala. (Something we have enjoyed doing the past 6 years). After we had completed our volunteering we explored various parts of Guatemala we had not seen. I had always wanted to see Mayan temples ever since I worked at the Denver Art Museum around its fabulous Meso American collection. The DAM has one of the most wonderful and beautiful Central American art collections in the world. We drove with a few friends to a small temple area called Mixco Viejo. This is between Guatemala City and La Antigua around and up a lot of windy roads.

The only entry into the area of Mixco Viejo is up a narrow trail that made the area easy to defend. Until that is, 1525 when the Spaniard Pedro Alvarado's laid siege and secretly entered an unguarded back entry. This gave rise to the motto beware of the "Danger Within",that supposedly many Mayan families remember today. I wondered at the 100's of Mayans that had trod this path to enter onto the plateau of temples arranged above their farm lands. Had they carried the sticks and branches I see them carrying today through this narrow portal to light signal fires?
I have been off on a few "arty adventures" these past months and I have missed taking the time to stop and digest just what I have seen and experiences. Frequently blogging gives me time to relate my daily experiences to how I live, interpret my life visually and often with color.
I am also just beginning to process my most recent "arty adventure" in Umbria ,Italy, and am looking forward to sharing the colors, forms, ideas and food which I experienced there.

My " arty adventures "have many back stories, one which I will quicly share is--

Almost 25 years ago myself and my friend Julie were relatively new Moms who loved to make art. We decided when our children were at an age we felt comfortable leaving them with babysitters we would spend one day a week out of our homes drawing on site. I believe we started with sketch books and headed out to the Botannic Gardens and local greenhouses. How we changed to working with pastels I don't exactly recall. Neither of us really knew much about them but I think we liked the perceived portability of them. Keep in mind this was before the internet. (We couldn't go look up "how to's" and quickly get multiple answers as you can do today) We did look up stuff at the Library and found books and magazines. When our children were older we would take weekend trips to Taos, New Mexico with other women and rent houses to stay in. Our husbands would baby-sit. While in Taos we would get up early and paint the sunset, the adobe walls. Our favorite place at that time was the studio of Andrew Dasburg.( Dasburg was one of the great artists of the Taos area of the early 1900's.) So began our first arty adventures,. From there as our children grew older we have taken them with us to France on our arty adventures. We spent time in Auvillar France, Corsica amd Marmoiron, France. Travelling to all of those places provided a wealth of rich experiences. Our adventures continue and we continue to share them with some of our first fellow travelers. : www.auvillar.fr
Well Fame and Good Fortune do happen. Check out the blog "The Colorist"http://thecolorist.blogspot.com/ . If you have somehow missed Casey Klahn's (the pastelist) blog you do need to give your self a treat and sign on. I've been following Casey's blog for several years. I was first pulled in by the name - after all I am a color lover and I always seek out fellow color lovers. His thoughtful blogging as he has defined his muse and strong color development have been a "go to " spot on the internet for me. When you start following his posts you will discover his thoughtful explorations of the reasoning and "why we are doing this". It was with little hesitation that I signed on for a workshop with Casey when I learned he would be here in Denver.
Above you can see Casey as he starts off our 2 day workshop using his beloved Diane Townsend gray Terrages. A color (gray) we in bright crisp colored Denver had to see to believe. Although the first day of our workshop was a gray rainy day. The exterior color did not match the wonderful full of color ideas which Casey tossed our way.
You will find me referring back to this workshop in future blogs. Meanwhile if you are in an area where Casey is exhibiting or giving a workshop put him on your must meet and see list.
Here is a colorfilled day for you too.
Carole Buschmannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06512577927562345006noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7195244552820130213.post-14294509492515687802012-04-10T15:59:00.000-07:002012-04-10T16:02:47.151-07:00Eternal Spring

This was the first view I saw out my bedroom window in the "castillo" in La Antigua, Guatemala . It was my last day of a month long return visit to the "Land of the Eternal Spring". I could finally see the crisp outline of the dormant volcano "Agua" after many mornings of covering clouds. It was a glorious spring day and I took a few last photos on that day in the gardens of the grounds of Escuela San Jose el Viejo http://www.sanjoseelviejo.com/. Trying to remember spring when I returned to the region of cold (Colorado) and 3 more months of winter. Here is a peek out our side window at the activo volcan Fuego
We have even bravely tucked winter blankets and coats away. One has to be very cautious about that here as a snow storm or two has been known to quickly cover all the bright promise of spring.
